PURPOSE/SCOPE:
You will be the #2 person in this growing department of 13 (will soon be adding a few more junior engineers) and Assistant Manager of the Applications Engineering group. The current 12-person department consists of: a) Manager of Applications Engineering b) 2 mid-level Applications Engineers c) 4 Junior Applications Engineers and d) 6 Designers and CAD Drafters. We use Solidworks 3-D CAD for modeling.
As Team Leader you will not only be the Senior Applications Engineer providing application and design support to customers, outside sales force, and sales engineering department in the application of company products lines, but also mentor and coach junior engineers and designers.
Our development is 80/20 with 80% being modifications of existing product design platforms and 20% being unique, custom development.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
1. Provide mentoring, coaching and project leadership to new and junior Application Engineers and designers.
2. Fill in as Manager of Applications Engineering when the manager is out-of-town or on vacation.
3. Review for completeness incoming work assignments such as but not limited to order processing, quote processing, sample requests and engineering request.
4. Perform basic component stress analysis to insure the structural integrity of all components and assemblies as is required by the application.
5. Provide engineering support to outside sales force (including our distributor network) and customers.
6. Analyze customer application requirements and the application of standard, modified, and special unique company products and designs.
7. Suggest possible modifications to application specifications that may materially affect engineering problems, cost, or manufacturing lead-time.
8. Provide engineering service assistance on installation operation, repair, and other customer problems.
9. Assist external customers on RGA's involving failures due to misapplied product. Review application and recommend solutions.
10. Participate in new product development to assure alignment with current application requirements.
11. Approve work done by design drafters for suitability and accuracy.
12. Prepare various production/presentation drawings and related documentation utilizing computer aided design equipment. This includes creating new designs using 3D modeling software (Solidworks).
13. Prepare bill of materials for all finished goods and component parts.
14. Responsible for processing quote requests for unique, customer products and projects. Includes working with other departments to verify manufacturing capabilities and developing costs for special components/assemblies. Also requires customer collaboration to develop specifications based on application.
15. Only limited travel is required because most of our work is done via e-mail or on the phone with our customers who are mainly Design Engineers at the companies we serve.
REQUIREMENTS:
1. Senior Design Engineer with At least 7 years design engineering experience: for example either: a) machine design with a custom machinery builder specifying pneumatic cylinders as part of the machinery or b) air or pneumatic cylinder design or c) industrial automation.
2. Bachelors Degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering.
3. (Prefer) Masters degree (e.g. MBA or MSME).
4. Proficiency with 3-D CAD including: a) Solidworks b) ProE c) Inventor or d) Unigraphics.
5. Excellent communication skills (written, oral, and listening).
6. Ability to manage projects.
7. Past experience mentoring and coaching junior engineers.
8. Ability to apply principles of logical and scientific thinking to define complex problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions/recommendations. Can interpret an extensive variety of complex technical instructions in mathematical or illustrative form and work with information that is both abstract and variable.
9. Understanding of the risks associated with changes to standard product; including changes driven from cost reductions, design improvements, etc.
