What does the achievement gap for students with limited English proficiency look like in Chicago? On the Illinois Standards Achievement Tests (ISAT) which assesses 3rd-8th grade students' reading, math, and science skills, 36% of students with limited English proficiency met or exceeded state standards compared to 81% of students proficient in English. This means that 64% of students with limited English proficiency are not meeting state standards and are falling further behind. In reading, only 18.4% met or exceeded state standards compared to 74.1% of students proficient in English. This achievement gap continues to impact students as they move through high school with devastating results. This past spring, only 65% of seniors in Chicago Public Schools who were currently or were formerly in English Language Learner programs graduated from high school.
